Tasty night out

Ad

A movie and meal are the classic components of a good night out, especially if the food tastes nice and the movie is a good one. If the good film offers important insights, not just thrills and spills, and moves its audience, even better. If the food is kosher, it’s heavenly.

More than 60 people attended “Taste of Limmud” on Sunday 13th May and got to share in this great experience.

Producer Jason Hoff was in attendance for the hometown premiere of his documentary "804" and to answer questions after the screening. The poignant documentary reveals some of what was experienced by the South African Machal volunteers who risked all to defend the newly formed State of Israel in the War of Independence. I was one of a number of audience members honoured to have a connection to someone appearing in the film: my great aunt Ruth Stern served as a nurse in the Medical Corps.

Next on the bill was Darryl Hoffman who shared his experiences in the culinary world and told how Yossi’s Café is the manifestation of his dream Israeli-style café in Durban. Limmudniks packed the foyer to taste the exquisite Middle Eastern flavours of his popular "Sultan Fainted" dish.

Once again Limmud Durban created an event for Jews of all sects to be seen at, gathering together and advancing on our collective and individual Jewish journeys!
