David Friedman recently celebrated his third birthday at Moriah. Mazal tov David! We enjoyed having Rabbi Friedman visit us.

Our Second Term has been an enjoyable and busy one. The Moriah learners have had great fun learning their colours and celebrating Lag b’Omer and Shavuot. We have also concentrated on the concept of “Derech Eretz” and learnt about good manners and treating our family, friends and domestic workers with respect. We are so proud of our delightful little learners who reward us each day with their gorgeous smiles, their readiness to learn and each one’s exciting developments.

As the first term draws to a close, we are delighted with the progress made by our little learners. They have all developed in this short time and it is rewarding to note their many achievements and milestones, however tiny, which we acknowledge daily with great love and enthusiasm. Every child’s uniqueness is celebrated at Moriah, as immortalised in these words of Dr Seuss.

“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is 'Youer' than You.” (book: Happy Birthday to You)

The children are all very excited about the festival of Purim. Through the use of creative audio visual materials, we have endeavoured to bring this fun festival alive and it is gratifying to witness the retention of knowledge and level of understanding shown by the children. Their favourite activity is to shake their musical instruments vigorously at any mention of Haman and to offer the most creative suggestions about how to dispose of him! We have also heard delicious suggestions for fillings in the hamantaschen which the children so enjoy baking.

We look forward to another exciting term where a range of holistic activities such as ball skills, dance and movement, baking, art and music are offered in our learning centred environment.

AdWe have introduced a ball skills programme at Moriah called Ball Fun. This programme is aimed at extending our little learners and providing them with age appropriate hand/eye co-ordination and listening skills. Our coach is Mondli Nyawose, who heads up Amawundlu, a sports development organisation active in many schools and sports clubs in the Durban area. Mondli 's nurturing approach won every child over and they all enjoyed a fabulous and energetic first session. "Ball fun, ball fun, come along and learn to play " is our very appropriate motto.

Moriah School celebrated Chanukah and the end of a very special year with a fabulous party attended by all of those dear to us. Rabbbi Zekry, moms, dads, grannies and grandpas so enjoyed watching the little ones participating and singing with such enthusiasm. Doughnuts, delicious cheese blintzes made by Selma Lurie and latkes from Beth Shalom rounded off a wonderful morning. We also thanked the staff of Moriah who assist us and care for us;
caregiver and Sipho Maphumulo, security guard for all their help during the year and presented them with a token of appreciation.

We continually impress upon the children the importance of thanking our staff and treating them with courtesy and respect. We even sing a special song about Derech Eretz! Ariela Mizrachi, Mikaela Pillemer and Jade Selikow thanked Primrose Maphumulo, Caregiver and Sipho Maphumulo,Security Guard for all their help during the year and presented them with a token of appreciation.

We are delighted to welcome Slade Stark to the Moriah family! We are enjoying a busy third term which commenced with learning about our 5 senses and our bodies. We have enjoyed teaching the children a musical gymnastics programme designed to exercise their bodies and minds. In the Talmud and Midrash, there are approximately 200 teachings concerning derech eretz as decent, polite, respectful, thoughtful, and civilized behavior As we will soon be focusing on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, we have encompassed these concepts, and as young as our learners are, we continually encourage them to thank and respect their caregivers, help their teachers and show kindness to their peers. It is so rewarding to see these concepts so readily embraced and to see mitzvot carried out on a daily basis with such enthusiasm!

We are delighted to welcome Raphael Moshal to the Moriah family! It is lovely to have him join in our routines and activities with such enthusiasm.

The children enjoy the weekly ritual of challah baking and then having "Shabbat" as pictured below. Each child takes home a freshly baked and beautifully braided mini challah. It is such fun to roll the dough and be covered in flour!

Every week somebody gets a turn to be the Abba or the Ima and to say the blessings. Their favourite part is to eat the challah in preference to anything else offered.

The children enjoy the Shabbat ring and sing their favourite songs with gusto. The aroma of freshly baked challot and the sound of young voices singing "Bim Bam" and "Shabbat Angels" truly contributes to a meaningful Shabbasdik atmosphere in our special school.

Moriah

This term has been an exciting one in which the children have learnt all about Colours, Pets and the Weather.

The fun and meaning we have attached to the celebrations of Yom Haatzmaut, Lag b'Omer and Shavuot have further reinforced their love of Yiddishkeit and the classroom has resonated with the sound of their beautiful young voices joining in with gusto to the traditional Jewish songs and melodies.

Being an early childhood educator is a unique profession that is extremely rewarding. We are so privileged to witness the daily developments and achievements from our little ones.

"A teacher is a compass that activates the magnets of curiosity, knowledge, and wisdom in the pupils."

- Ever Garrison

This is part of our vision at Moriah and we endeavour to uphold this through our loving interaction with each unique child who attends our very special school.

We were delighted to welcome a new little learner, Mikayla Pillemer, to the Moriah family! It is always so rewarding to see the younger siblings of past Moriah pupils enter our school with such enthusiasm.

This term the children will be learning about Colours, which we will incorporate with the related Chaggim. This will include blue for Yom Ha'atzmaut, green for Shavuot and orange for Lag b'Omer. The children will be dressing up in the various colours to further enhance their learning .

We always enjoy baking a cake for Yom Ha'atzmaut and this yearthe children helped us to ice the Israeli flag onto the cake! This was messy but delicious fun.
